Why Are Peacock Bass Only In South Florida?

A non-native species introduced to South Florida's waterways in 1980 to control invasive species.

While peacock bass are indeed found predominantly in South Florida, particularly in the Miami-Dade County area, they are not native to this region. Peacock bass are native to the Amazon River Basin in South America, where they inhabit freshwater rivers and the surrounding lakes and lagoons.

In the 1980s, peacock bass were introduced to South Florida as part of an effort to control invasive species such as the spotted tilapia and mayan cichlid. They were stocked in the freshwater canal systems and lakes of Miami-Dade County, where they thrived and established self-sustaining populations.

The warm climate, abundance of suitable habitat, and absence of natural predators in South Florida provided ideal conditions for peacock bass to thrive and reproduce. As a result, they have become a popular sportfish among anglers in the region.

While peacock bass have been introduced to other parts of the United States, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico, their populations outside of South Florida are generally limited and less established.

Peacock bass are tropical fish and are not well-suited to cold weather conditions. They thrive in warm, tropical climates with water temperatures typically ranging from 70°F to 90°F (21°C to 32°C). When water temperatures drop below 60°F (15°C), peacock bass can become stressed, and prolonged exposure to cold temperatures will be fatal.

Even though South Florida is tropical in nature, it still produces winters that bring cold temperatures and potential freezes. During cold snaps, peacock bass may seek out warmer water refuges, which will typically be managed by looking for deeper water, in order to survive. However, extreme cold events can still result in mortality among peacock bass populations. This is why peacock bass are not suitable to any other part of the continental United States outside of South Florida.
